The Harmonizer Modes

The harmonizer is a very entertaining device that makes your musical performances more realistic and fascinating. Obviously, to use this effect properly you need to experiment and become familiar with several operations that are very simple and effective. D-Voice's harmonizer provides several modes that can be selected in real time or stored in the (8 different) Presets.

Vocoder Mode This is the classic harmonizing mode for use with MIDI Files that have a Vocalist track, like MF3 files. In this mode, the harmonizer works automatically. The user just sings and, during the performance, he will hear his own voice multiplied choruses that vary from 1 to 4 voices, like in the original song. This mode, for factory adjustment purposes, is set to receive the vocalist track on MIDI channel 5. If you are using MIDI Files with the vocalist track on a different channel, with D-Voice you can adjust the reception channel to the same value. Channel adjustments can be stored in one of the GLOBAL PRESET memories for rapid recall during performances.
CHORDAL Mode

D-Voice is able to automatically recognize chords from notes received via MIDI File, or played in real time. This mode is very useful for:
• Playing the harmony chords live, while D-Voice completely harmonizes the voice. It doesn't matter whether the chords are played with the left hand or if you play with a pianistic style. D-Voice recognizes a chord wherever it's played on the keyboard so long as a minimum of two notes are played simultaneously.
Harmonizing the voice with MIDI Files that don't have a vocalist track. Adjusting the reception MIDI channel to the same channel as the MIDI transmission of a track containing chords (such as the piano or violin track), will allow D-Voice to recognize the chords and it will harmonize the voice as a consequence.

The Chordal mode adapts to the singer's vocal range so there are 4 Chordal versions available: baritone, tenor, soprano and mezzo-soprano. Choose the version that best suits the singer's range.
In Chordal mode the "chorus" is reproduced without interruption for the whole song. You, thus, need to turn it on and off as needed during the piece.
For turning it off and on you can:
- use the HARM key. Pressing it just once turns the chorus on and off;
- use the Sustain pedal (more comfortable) connected to the FOOTSWITCH 1 plug on the back of the device. In the default factory setting the pedal is disabled. To enable it:
• Press OPTIONS. Footswitch 1 appears
• Select Harmonizer On/Off using the DIAL knob
• Press OPTIONS again. It will remain enabled even when D-Voice is turned off.

The Chordal mode and its relative MIDI channel adjustments are not preset at the factory. If desired, they can be stored in one of the GLOBAL PRESET memories for rapid recall during performances.

One recommendation: a successful effect in both Vocoder and Chordal mode requires a clear, confident style. A thin weak voice creates a feeble chorus that isn't very pretty.

Other possibilities:

In addition to those described so far, D-Voice's HARMONIZER function provides modes for harmonizing that don't require a MIDI connection and are based on the singer's notes. These are:
• Octaves (and variations)
• 5th above
• 4th below
• Detune (2 or 4 voices)

Using the Vocoder and Chordal modes, the chorus is always in pitch! Even if you are accidentally out of tune, the chorus is always right. But the other modes are based on the singer's notes and so, if you make a mistake, the whole chorus is out of tune!
